Why Krill Oil is the new buzzword in Omega 3 supplements.

Like many people, I do not like taking supplements as I am always hoping that my diet offers enough vitamins and minerals to keep me healthy. But I do take essential omega 3 fatty acids (only slowly supplied in the diet after conversion of other fatty acids) as I think of them as my ‘anti rust, anti aging’ secret weapon.

But having come across some supplements where the fish oil was rancid, I became very wary and decided to only buy a better quality (ie more expensive) brand. However just recently I have switched to good quality krill oil supplements because of the science and research behind the supply.

Krill oil is extracted from the small, shrimp-like crustacean Euphasia superba, the Antarctic krill, which inhabits the Southern Ocean.  
                         
Krill is the main food source for baleen whales, and is the most abundant biomass on earth because of its high regeneration properties. Because krill are at the bottom of the food chain, have a very short lifespan of 1 to 2 years and live in the clean Antarctic waters, this makes krill oil naturally low in heavy metals, dioxins and pesticides.*

Pure krill oil carries omega-3s in the form of phospholipids that deliver the essential fatty acids directly to your body's cells. Krill oil has been shown in clinical trials to effectively improve cardiovascular disease by reducing total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. A relatively small dose of krill oil has been found to have significant anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects in clinical trials. It can also to be considered for Premenstrual syndrome and period pain.

But even better

  • It has better absorption than fish oil and it means you can take less capsules to achieve an effect 
  • The presence of the Phospholipids gives cells better antioxidant protection against free radical attack ie better antiaging effect
  • It is more stable, less likely to turn rancid and can be kept at room temperature
  • It is a renewable, pollution free food source

However if you have a shellfish or seafood allergy or are on blood thinning medication (Warfarin), then you need to monitor your intake of omega 3 oils.
